Kokrajhar, Feb. 28: The United People's Party (UPP) organised a padayatra from Fakiragram to Chitila in Kokrajhar district today to reach out to the public at the grassroots level ahead of the Assembly elections in Assam.
UPP president Urkhao Gwra Brahma, who is the party's probable candidate from Kokrajhar West Constituency, expressed confidence in the party's prospects in the Assembly election.
"The UPP will play a major role in the forthcoming election and will form the next government in Dispur, along with the ruling Congress. The people will support the UPP to bring changes in the Bodoland Territorial Areas District (BTAD)," said Brahma.
Suggesting that the chances of the BJP and the BPF forming the government in Dispur are nil, Brahma said the Congress would form the government again with the support of the UPP.
Talking about the prospects of winning the elections in Kokrajhar West Constituency, he said neither Rabiram Narzary (BPF candidate) nor the AIUDF was a factor to be considered in the constituency.
Brahma said the party was going for a pre-poll understanding with the Congress and the two parties would have a seat-sharing understanding in a few constituencies and friendly contests in others.
"We have talked to the Congress and the decision of a pre-poll understanding is almost finalised," he said.
He criticised the ruling BJP at the Centre for betraying the people and said the central government had forgotten the promises it had made before the elections.
"In one-and-a-half years after coming to power at the Centre, the BJP has done nothing. Now they have joined hands with the BPF just to be in power," he said.
He also accused the BPF of large-scale corruption in the BTAD and of depriving the common people of equality.
The UPP, which will make its maiden entry in the elections this time, will contest directly in 12 constituencies within the BTAD and two constituencies outside (in Sonitpur district).
The names of the candidates would be declared soon, Brahma said.
