JUNIOR BADMINTON

Guwahati, Feb. 22: Uddipan Baruah and Tehzeeb Rahul Taufique moved into the second round of the PNB MetLife Junior Badminton Championship at Kanaklata Indoor Stadium here today.

Uddipan defeated Milinda Barua 11-6, 11-3 while Tehzeeb defeated Joy Chatterjee 11-7, 11-1 in the first round of the boys' under-13 event.

In the other under-13 boys' matches, Anubhav Dutta defeated Sumanta Ghosh 11-10, 10-11, 21-10, Raj Thapa beat Digbijoy Borah 11-6, 11-9, Chanduditya Gogoi defeated Stearly Singh 11-7, 11-9, Maharnav Mahanta beat Bhargab Thakuria 11-6 11-5 and Roman Kishore Dutta defeated Rachit Kunwar 11-8, 6-11, 11-9.

In the second round of the girls' under-13 matches, Tania Bordoloi defeated Harshita Thakuria 11-6, 11-7, Navopreeta Ashim beat Sujata Mahato 11-1, 11-0 and Dolma Tamang defeated Anushree Mahanta 8-11, 11-6, 11-7.

Anchal Roy, Disha Sarma, Porishmita Deka, Anushka Parmar, Nandini Goswami and Rishika Mahanta, Jyotishmita Hazarika, Bishakha Gupta and Huidrom Vilinda Chanu advanced to the next round of 32.

In the first round of the boys' under-11 matches, Arsismaan Rajkhowa defeated C. Lalruat Kima 21-12 while Anirban Gogoi got the better of Tanuj Roy 21-11.

In other under-11 matches, Lobsang Choiden Sherdang, N. Yohenba Singh, and Ayushman Nandi posted wins to move into the second round.

More than 550 participants are registered for the tournament approved by Badminton Association of India and supported by the Assam Badminton Association.

Tennis carnival: India Club here is organising the CORAS-Pratiksha-India Club Tennis-O-Mania, a three-day tennis carnival for players aged above 40 years from Friday. Players from the Northeast and West Bengal are taking part in the meet.
