Dergaon: Dergaon police on Monday interrogated the headmaster of Swaguri Mising Middle English School in Assam's Golaghat district in connection with midday meal.
The police said about 90 people of the village had, in an FIR lodged on Sunday, alleged that headmaster Sobilal Pegu had sold about 20 quintals of rice supplied to the school under the midday meal scheme.
Denying the allegations, Pegu told reporters that a shop had supplied the rice for the past three months when government supply of rice was not received. When the supply resumed, he returned the rice to the shopkeeper.
The police also interrogated the president of the school managing committee.
Another section of villagers said the headmaster was innocent and the matter was a "political conspiracy".
Dergaon police station officer-in-charge Robin Kalita said investigation was on and that documents of the cooperative shop and the education department would be verified.
