Jorhat: A fifth semester student of Jorhat Institute of Science and Technology (JIST) was arrested on Wednesday on charges of forging Scheduled Caste (SC) certificate to get admission.

He was arrested after a case was registered with Teok police station.

The student, identified as Dipjyoti Patgiri, a resident of Ulubam in Guwahati, was arrested after an investigation by the police into the allegations was found to be true.

Patgiri was produced before the court of chief judicial magistrate Rani Bodo on Wednesday and sent to judicial custody.

The FIR against Patgiri, who got admitted to the JIST in 2015, was lodged by the central committee of Anusucit Jati Yuba Chatra Parishad.

The Parishad has demanded expulsion of the student immediately.

The organisation's president Rubul Das told reporters at the Jorhat Press Club on Wednesday that the state government should take steps against the officials who certified Patgiri as an SC student.
