Shillong: The Khasi Students' Union has urged the state government to address the issues pertaining to the border and inner-line permit.

"The state is 46 years old but the reality is that the state has no proper boundary. How many years more will we have to experience this?" said president Lambokstarwell Marngar, addressing the gathering at the 40th anniversary celebrations of the union here.

"I believe the new government will hear this and chalk out ways to tackle this issue," he said.

Marngar said the union would take up steps if the government fails to address the issue saying, "We cannot just watch over the difficulties faced by our people in border areas day after day."

On matters related to influx, Marngar said the union will follow up the matter on comprehensive mechanism where entry-exit points will be set up to keep a watch on outsiders entering the state.

On the other hand, he asserted that the union's demand for ILP would continue. "It is high time that this matter is discussed in the Assembly. We expect that the new government will do the needful so that it comes up with a strong law against influx," he said.

"The message that the union wants to give is that we should keep all our differences aside and understand that we should be united as one," he said.

"We understand that our former leaders trotted the same path but what excites us is when we come face to face with such challenges," Marngar said.

Last year the union opposed the coming of railways into the state, as no strong mechanisms were set up to check the entry and exit of people from outside the state.

Former president Paul Lyngdoh said the struggle of former leaders had made the union what it is today.

"The union is not just an organisation, or a students' body, but an institution. Let us be proud of this. We have left the union, but the union will never leave our body and soul," said the former legislator.

Covers and stamps of the union were released by former leaders at the occasion.

Earlier, a rally was carried out in the city to mark the union's 40th anniversary.
