Nandini wins silver

Imphal: W. Nandini Devi of Manipur won a silver medal at the 15th Asian women’s weightlifting championships in Kuanhuwando, China, on Friday. She won the medal in the 53-kg category with a total lift of 200 kg and has qualified for the world championships in Canada in November. Nandini had won three gold medals in the Commonwealth weightlifting championships in Nauru (1998) and Melbourne (1999).

League

Guwahati: Nowgong Town Club defeated Star Sporting Club 4-0 in the Nowgong Sports Association’s second division football league on Friday. Renaissance Club and Probah Gosthi will clash for the title on Saturday.

Junior meets

Guwahati: The Assam directorate of sports and youth welfare will organise the Deokon Trophy and Pilik Choudhury Trophy inter-district school football tournaments in Gohpur and Sonari. The Deokon Trophy under-17 meet will begin on September 21, while the Pilik Choudhury Trophy (under-14) tournament will start on September 24.

Imphal: Boxer Ngairangbam Arjunkanta of Manipur has been inducted into the national team for the sub-junior training-cum-competition, beginning September 16 in Uzbekistan. The national gold medallist left for Uzbekistan on Friday.

DU tourney

Dibrugarh: Naharkatiya College and Moran College won their respective matches in the Dibrugarh University (DU) inter-college football league on Friday. The Naharkatiya side defeated Duliajan College 6-5 via sudden death, while Moran College won 3-1 through tiebreaker against DU PG Classes.
