Guwahati: The service sector's contribution to Assam's state domestic product during 2016-17 increased by 1.54 per cent compared to 2011-12 while that of agriculture and industry registered a decline during the period.

The Economic Survey, Assam 2017, 18 revealed that the service sector contributed 45.51 per cent in 2016-17, which was 43.97 per cent in 2011-12. The contribution of agriculture, which plays the most significant role in the state economy came down to 19.34 per cent from 19.89 during the same period while that of industry decreased by nearly 2 per cent - from 30.63 per cent in 2011-12 to 28.72 per cent in 2016-17.

The service sector comprises trade, repair, hotel and restaurants, transport, storage, communication and services related to broadcasting, financial services, real estate, ownership of dwelling and professional services, public administration and other services. The sectoral analysis revealed that at the current price in 2016-17, share of the growth of the sub-sectors to the service sectors is estimated to be 9.80 per cent in trade, repair, hotel and restaurants, 10.27 per cent in transport, storage, communication and services related to broadcasting, 9.85 per cent in real estate, ownerships of dwelling and professional services and 16.60 per cent in public administration and other services.

The survey report, which was tabled in the Assembly, recently said though the share of agriculture and its allied activities in GSDP at the current prices had marginally come down, yet agriculture continued to occupy a significant place in the state economy and the decrease could be due to fluctuations in the production of foodgrain, vegetables and fruits.

"The slight decrease in agriculture and allied sector and industry resulted in increase in service sector as well as taxes and subsidies," it said.

Agriculture and allied sector consists of crops, livestock, forestry and logging, fishing and aquaculture, while the industry sector mainly comprised mining and quarrying, manufacturing, electricity, gas, water supply and other utility services.

Per capita income of the state in terms of net state domestic product at constant price in 2011-12 was estimated to be Rs 51,040 for the year 2016-17 which was Rs 41,142 in 2011-12. This was Rs 48,725 in 2015-16. The same was Rs 12,447 in 2000-01.
