t2: What brings you to Guwahati and the cleft-care centre?
Sahar Biniaz: Well, as a Miss Universe-Canada, I decided to be associated with three charities and Operation Smile is one of them, which is why I am here. But I must say I am really impressed with the centre, particularly its cleanliness. The doctors, nurses and paramedics are all very good. I am here to promote the cause of children with cleft deformities. Many a time we might find such children develop a complex from fear of being ridiculed by society. But now that facilities and expert advice are here for the taking, guardians need not think twice before bringing their wards here.
t2: Is this your first visit to India?
SB: Actually, I was born in India but brought up in Iran, where I belong. But now I am based in Canada. I have always wanted to visit my birthplace… and here I am. India's culture is vibrant and people here are very welcoming. I am enjoying my stay here.
t2: Do you enjoy Indian music and films?
SB: Oh absolutely! I watch Hindi movies. Lately, I
watched Barfi!. It’s really a nice movie, isn’t it? I like Shah Rukh Khan as well. In fact, one of the doctors at this cleft-care centre resembles him (laughs).

t2: So you understand Hindi?
SB: I do understand Hindi a bit. I have been hearing people speak Hindi here and I think that it is somewhat similar to Farsi… the language which I speak in Iran. In fact, many words are similar. During my stay here, I have been using two words namaste and haanji quite frequently (laughs).
t2: Do you have any plans to visit Guwahati again?
SB: I will definitely return to Guwahati in June this year to participate in the international mission of surgeries that will be performed on children with cleft deformities. This will also give me a chance to promote the cause of these children.
