Guwahati, Oct. 17: Punit Basu and Simran Ahmed emerged the under-19 boys and girls' champions respectively in the South Point School Guwahati Chess Championship, organised by Guwahati Chess Association at South Point School, here from October 13 to 16.
Simran tallied three points to claim the title, while Shreya Banik scored two for the second position.
Alpana Chamuwa Gogoi scored 2.5 points to claim the women's title.
In the under-17 boys' event, Uddipta Kakati emerged champion scoring 5.5 points from six rounds while Pallab Bhattacharjee claimed the second position with three points.
Arunabh Gohain and Himashree Deka won the under-15 boys and girls' titles respectively. Arunabh scored five points from six rounds. Aarohan Bharadwaj and Maharnab Deka also scored five points each but got second and third position respectively on the basis of tiebreak scores.
Upashna Thangjam got the girls' second position.
In the under-13 group, Rishabh Singh (six points from seven rounds) and Rishita Sinha (four points) claimed the boys and girls' titles respectively. Rajdeep Mudiar and Rishabh Sarkar (5.5 points each) finished second and third respectively on the basis of tiebreak scores. Debaprita Roy scored four points for the fourth position.
In the girls' event, Anouska Priyam (three points) got second position and Medha Barooah finished third scoring two points. Daiwakshya Choudhury scored one point for the fourth position.
In the under-11 girls', Ananya Deka scored two points to claim the title. Subhangi Bhuyan was second.
In the under-11 boys' event, Novoneel Talukdar scored five points for the first position, followed by Pran Gobinda Parashar Kashyap (five points) in second position, on the basis of tiebreak scores. Puskar Basak scored 4.5 points to claim the third position while Sajal Saroj Lahkar scored four points for the fourth position.
In the under-9 girls' category, Baibhabi Baruah clinched the title by scoring five points while Swarnika Biswas scored one point for second position.
In the boys' table, Mayank Chakraborty tallied five points for the first position, while Attri Nibir Borah also scored five points for the second position on the basis of tiebreak scores. Barnav Deka and Jyotshnav Talukdar finished third and fourth with three and two points respectively.
In the under-7 girls' category, Afsheen Afsha Zaman emerged champion scoring full five points from five rounds. In the boys' event, Mrinmoy Rajkhowa finished champion with four points from five rounds. Farhan Tanvir tallied three points for the third position. Ronit Barman bagged the third position scoring two points while Sinbanshu Deka scored one for the fourth position.
Nilkamal Das became champion in the veterans' category scoring 4.5 points while Nakul Basumatary finished second with four points. Sankar Sarma also scored four points but came third on the basis of tiebreak scores. Hiranya Das scored three points and came fourth.
The top four players from every category is selected to represent Guwahati in the forthcoming All-Assam Chess Championship.
Promising player Shahil Dey, the national under-9 champion this year, and Ashvin Sharma, (14th position) in the same meet, were felicitated by Guwahati Chess Association during the closing ceremony.
School cricket: River Rine Cricket Coaching Centre will organise the 11th Mrigen Sarma Under-16 Inter-school cricket tournament at Latasil playground from November 1.
The organisers have requested the schools interested for participation to contact the centre on or before October 30.
