Postmaster caught in EMO scam

A special CBI court here today convicted three persons, including a postal department employee, in a scam involving postal department's electronic money order (EMO).

Guwahati, Feb. 18: A special CBI court here today convicted three persons, including a postal department employee, in a scam involving postal department's electronic money order (EMO).

The court sentenced former post master of Basistha sub-post office (Guwahati) Hari Kanta Kalita and two of his associates, Nazrul Islam and Iftikar Hussain, to three years' imprisonment after convicting them under different sections of the IPC and Prevention of Corruption Act.

The CBI, during its investigation, found that between 2008 and 2011 the accused had misappropriated around Rs 15.41 lakh by issuing bogus EMOs. Of that amount, Rs 3.03 lakh was recovered from the accused.

The court also imposed a fine of Rs 20,000 on Kalita and Rs 25,000 each on Islam and Hussain.

The court order said investigation by the CBI had revealed that during his service as sub-post master at Basistha sub-post office between August 2008 and August 2011, Kalita had engaged Islam to help him in daily computer work without prior approval of authorities and had even shared his user ID and password with Islam illegally.

The CBI had registered a case in 2011 based on a complaint lodged by Kutubuddin Ahmed, the then superintendent of post offices, Guwahati division, Meghadoot Bhawan. The CBI official visited the sub-post office, examined the witnesses and seized various documents before filing the charge sheets.
