Imphal: Manipur police on Friday appealed to the people to organise agitations and demonstrations democratically and peacefully.

Speaking at a news conference at Imphal West police headquarters here on Friday inspector-general of Manipur police Clay Khongsai said demonstrators should take permission from the government to organise a rally.

Khongsai appealed to the people not to provoke policemen during agitations.

A joint statement, issued by the university community and Manipur University Students' Union (Musu), has expressed its gratitude to the people of Manipur in general and students in particular for their spontaneous support to the 48-hour general strike. The Musu has cautioned it would storm the Assembly on Monday.
