Itanagar, April 23: The All-Nyishi Students’ Union today called for a review of the new proposal of the All-India Delimitation Committee, assigned to reorganise areas and population of constituencies across the country.
It said if the proposals for Arunachal Pradesh were to be implemented, the Nyishi community would be the worst-affected.
“The Nyishi community would stand to lose at least three existing Assembly seats under the new proposal of the committee, headed by Justice (retd.) Kuldeep Singh,” ANSU president Likha Tongum told reporters here.
He said the Nyishi community would go to any length to fight for its rights.
Though the Nyishi tribe has the largest population among the 26 major tribes of the state (covering one-third of the state’s population), it has remained the most backward, Tongum said. He also termed the proposals discriminatory.
The committee has proposed 14,000 people per constituency, he said.
“The Nyishi community will stand to lose at least three existing Assembly seats under the new proposal of the committee in the Nyishi belt, covering five districts, whereas it has fixed 5,000 people per constituency in Lohit district,” he said.
Stating that the proposal would not be acceptable to the tribe, Tongum said such proposals would have adverse effects because such delimited constituencies will be frozen till 2026.
Since Arunachal Pradesh is a tribal state, the floating population should not be taken into account for determining the size of the population, he said.
The Nyishi Elite Society, the apex body of the Nyishis, will hold a meeting on Tuesday to discuss the present delimitation proposals.
The NES’ executive members, elected representatives from the Nyishi tribe, ANSU, zila parishads chairpersons, heads of social organisations and as well as intellectuals will take part in the meeting, an NES release said.
Arunachal Pradesh minister for education Takam Sanjoy, who is also the government spokesman, said the government had already apprised the chairman of the delimitation committee about the peculiar ethnic pattern, topographical situation and socio-political scenario of the state.
The minister also urged for maintaining status quo in this regard.
