New notes

Guwahati, Dec. 2: Police recovered Rs 8.88 lakh in new currency from three persons, Zahidul Islam, Sahabub Alam and Dinesh Kalita, today. The three were arrested. The police suspect the trio were converting old notes into new currency for a commission.

Mishap

Dhubri: Soleman Ali, 22, died on the spot when his motorcycle hit the divider on Makrijhara-Piasbari road in Kokrajhar district on Thursday.

BSF officer

Guwahati: Rakesh Aggarwal took charge as inspector-general of Border Security Force, Guwahati Frontier, on Friday. He stressed on welfare of troops.

Envoy visit

Guwahati: US ambassador Richard Verma visited Kohima on Thursday as part of his familiarisation tour across the Northeast.

Jorhat: Sahitya Akademi in association with Sri Sri Uttar Kamalabari Xatra Sankardev Kristi Sangha, Majuli, will organise a two-day seminar on Mythology and Modern Indian Literature at the xatra from Monday.

Recruitment

Dhemaji: More than 500 aspirants from seven districts of Arunachal Pradesh on Friday participated in the second day of the army recruitment rally at 1 Bihar Regiment ground in Aalo in West Siang district.

Workshop

Dhubri: A workshop on Goalpariya folk song will be held at Krishnai in Goalpara district on December 21 and 22, organised jointly by On The Street, a cultural group, and Habraghat College.

Credit system

Dhemaji: A daylong workshop on implementing choice-based credit system at the undergraduate colleges under Dibrugarh University was organised on Friday at Silapathar College in Dhemaji district.

Tariff claim

Guwahati: Assam PCC on Friday claimed that the state government has increased power tariff by 59 paise per unit to bail out the Assam Power Distribution Company Limited of its debt of Rs 265 crore.

PCC plea

Guwahati: Assam PCC on Friday demanded special financial assistance for vegetable producers to tide over demonetisation.

Leopard killed

Guwahati, Dec. 2: A male leopard was killed by a group of people at Khanapara here this morning after it attacked and injured a youth. He is undergoing treatment.

Excise raid

Guwahati: Officials led by superintendent of excise Debajit Nath carried out raids in places like Adinggiri Hills, Pandu, Tamulichiga and 12 Mile in Kamrup district and destroyed 5,000kg fermented wash and around 500 litres of illicit liquor. They also arrested 26 persons.

Award

Guwahati: Shillong-based Jeewan Ram Mungi Devi Goenka Public Charitable Trust on Friday announced here that it will confer its lifetime achievement award to five Assam personalities - Abdul Mazid, Nirupama Borgohain, Ramen Choudhury, Runu Devi Thakur and Arun Lochan Das - on Sunday.
