Khiangte is the fourth legislator of the ruling party to resign in the last two months ahead of the Assembly polls slated for November 28.

He submitted his resignation to Speaker Hiphei on Monday.

Khiangte refused to comment on the reason for his resignation and said he would reveal it, along with his course of action, at a news conference on Tuesday.

Khiangte was dropped by the Congress as the official candidate for the Assembly polls.

With the resignation of Khiangte, the Congress’ strength in the 40-member House has come down to 30, while the Opposition Mizo National Front (MNF) has six members.

The setback for Congress began in September when home minister and second top brass of Congress, R. Lalzirliana, resigned from Lal Thanhawla’s cabinet on September 14, protesting against the government’s refusal to create a separate Saitual district.

Lalzirliana was expelled from the Congress over his alleged anti-party activities.

He later joined the MNF on October 15.

Former health minister and Congress MLA Lalrinliana resigned from the Assembly on October 3, protesting against the government’s refusal to recognise Khawzawl as a district.

He also joined the MNF and will be the official candidate in Chalfilh constituency.

Another Congress legislator, Buddha Dhan Chakma, who was the former fisheries minister, resigned on October 16 and joined the BJP the next day. Chakma is likely to contest from Tuichawng constituency.
