Man sentenced for 10 years

A 31-year-old man from Manipur was sentenced to 10 years' in jail by a sessions court here in a case related to smuggling of cannabis in an oil tanker.

Guwahati: A 31-year-old man from Manipur was sentenced to 10 years' in jail by a sessions court here in a case related to smuggling of cannabis in an oil tanker.

Additional sessions judge number 1, Kamrup (metro), Dipak Changkakati passed an order on Thursday sentencing the accused, Irungbam Anil Meitei, to undergo rigorous imprisonment for 10 years and to pay a fine of Rs 1 lakh.

He will have to serve one more year in jail if he fails to pay the fine.

Meitei was convicted for committing the offence under Section 20 (b) (ii) (c) of the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act, 1985.

"It is established that the prosecution side has proved the transportation of cannabis by the accused persons and accordingly, the accused is convicted under Section 20 (b) (ii) (c) of the NDPS Act," the judge said.

He was arrested by a team of Narcotics Control Bureau (NCB) officers on January 28, 2017, near the Inter-State Bus Terminus (ISBT) at Betkuchi after they seized 1490.08 kg cannabis from the oil tanker he was driving.

The contraband was found in 139 packets wrapped in newspapers and polythene sheets in the tanker bearing registration number MN-06 T/0336. Results of the tests conducted on samples collected from each packet by the NCB officials on the spot with drug detection kit turned out to be positive.

The accused hails from Pungdongham Awang Leikai under Lamlai police station in Imphal East district of Manipur. Advocate Ritu Raj Baishya represented the NCB in the court.
