Guwahati: Guwahati Municipal Corporation (GMC) on Friday revised the staffing pattern, in its general body meeting of the current councillor body. The tenure of the present body will end on July 31.
"The new pattern will initiate promotion of existing employees and recruitment. The previous staffing pattern had many loopholes and we revised it on Friday," GMC mayor Mrigen Sarania told The Telegraph.
Lately, GMC has been running mainly with employees on contract. There are around 1,400 daily wage employees and around 300 contractual employees in the GMC. In 2014, the state government asked the GMC to constitute a new staffing pattern but it was delayed because of various technical reasons. If the new pattern is accepted by the state government, a recruitment drive for the new 2,706 posts will be held soon.
"With the new pattern, the basic pay of contractual employees will also increase and will become Rs 250. Earlier, it was Rs 160. The GMC service commission will take a final decision on the new recruitment. The GMC needs to reform its staff structure or else it will face a severe manpower crunch after 2020," Sarania said.
The meeting sanctioned Rs 1 crore to each councillor for road and drainage development and another Rs 50 lakh for solid waste management in their respective area. It also decided to rename Rajgarh Road in Guwahati after Hiren Bhattacharya, a renowned poet of the state.
