Shillong: Four candidates on Friday filed their nomination papers for the byelections to Ranikor Assembly constituency and South Tura Assembly seat slated for August 23.
Congress candidate and former Tura Government Public School principal Charlotte W. Momin, who will take on chief minister Conrad Sangma, filed her nomination papers from South Tura.
Conrad, who is still the Lok Sabha MP from Tura, had filed his papers on July 31. Conrad must get elected as member of the 10th Meghalaya Assembly from South Tura in order to continue as chief minister. The South Tura seat became vacant after Agatha K. Sangma resigned as MLA to pave the way for her brother to contest the byelection.
From Ranikor constituency, three candidates filed their nomination papers - former Assembly Speaker and five-time legislator Martin Danggo as the NPP candidate, Jackiush Sangma as a Congress nominee and former Mawsynram legislator P.N. Syiem as the PDF candidate.
The Ranikor seat fell vacant when Danggo resigned as Congress MLA after the ruling NPP-led government upgraded Ranikor into a civil subdivision. The last date for filing of nominations in both the seats is August 6. Polling will be held on August 23 and counting of votes on August 27.
