Guwahati, Nov. 26: The state government has ordered eviction of unauthorised occupants from all the six government quarters here.

Sources in Dispur today said the order was issued recently by the commissioner of general administrative department, Ganesh Kalita.

The Assam Secretariat Service Association had in August urged the then chief secretary N.K. Das to pass orders for 100 per cent allotment of government quarters in favour of Secretariat employees. The association had told Das that 300 employees of the Secretariat were trying hard to get quarters.

An RTI, filed by ASSA general secretary Dilip Kalita in July, has revealed that 80 quarters are under unauthorised occupation in the six government complexes.

Altogether 61 quarters are under unauthorised occupation in Capital Complex, seven in Jawahar Nagar Housefed Complex, three in Natboma Housefed Complex, four in Super Market Complex, two in HUDCO Complex, Rukmininagar and three in Games Villages, Sarusajai.

The six complexes have 1,354 government quarters — 200 in Natboma Housefed Complex, 794 in Capital Complex, 132 in Jawahar Nagar Housefed Complex, 110 in Super Market Complex, 70 in HUDCO Complex, Rukmininagar and 48 in Games Villages, Sarusajai. Of them, 40 quarters are lying vacant.

“Some of these unauthorised quarters have been given on rent and some are occupied by persons even after their retirement,” the source said, adding that many quarters were occupied by government officials having houses or flats within greater Guwahati area.

According to government rules, a regular government employee with a house in greater Guwahati, either in his own name or in the name of his or her family, is not eligible for government quarters. Besides, a person occupying government quarters will have to vacate it within three years from the date of receiving the first instalment of house building loan from government or any other financial organisation for a house or flat within Guwahati area.
