Poachers held

Jorhat, April 2: Two poachers from Amtoli, near Bokakhat in Golaghat district, were arrested near Bhogdoi police outpost here at 5pm today. A .303 rifle, a magazine, 12 rounds of live ammunition and a silencer were found on them. he outpost’s in-charge, Hemen Das, said the two had confessed they were planning to kill rhinos in Kaziranga National Park.

Land row

Jorhat: The row over 93 bighas of land, selected by the government to set up a branch of the National Institute of Design in Tocklai tea estate at Rajabari here, ended on Monday after Jorhat district administration agreed to the two main demands of Chah Shramik Mukti Sangram Samity and Krishak Mukti Sangram Samiti — to grant miadi pattas to garden workers residing on the estate land and carry out tea sapling plantation in the garden’s vacant land.

Suspended

Jorhat: Additional deputy commissioner Biren Phukan, who is also the district elementary education officer, on Monday suspended the headmaster of Kakatichuk Lower Primary School in Majuli, Motilal Baruah, for alleged financial anomalies.

Rebel held

Guwahati: City police arrested a suspected leader of the Noyan faction of Kangleipak Communist Party from Manipuri Basti on Sunday night. No arms or ammunition were recovered.

Leopard

Sivasagar: A leopard attacked Mofizuddin Ahmed, a resident of Namti near Nazira in the district, when he went to gather firewood on Monday. The forest department has put up a cage to catch the animal. Ahmed has been hospitalised.

Mishap

Dhubri: Veterinarian Ukil Chandra Roy, 40, died on the spot when the Dhubri-Kamakhya fast passenger train hit him at Dhepdhepi level crossing here on Monday morning.

Body found

Dhubri: The body of Hemanta Roy, 14, of Kanhibri village under Manikpur police station of Bongaigaon district, was fished out from the Manas on Sunday night.

Guwahati: An inquiry has been ordered against the the officer-in-charge( OC ) of Sonapur police station, D. Saikia, on Monday over allegedly taking away cash Rs. 35 lakh forcibly from an official of soil conservation department recently. Inspector-general of police (central-western range) G.P. Singh confirmed that development and said that the probe will be conducted by an officer of the rank of additional superintendent of police, who will have to submit the inquiry report within a week. Singh said that necessary action will be taken based on the findings of the inquiry.
