Biennial election First prize ‘Rape’ charge May Day Interaction Suicide Lightning Students tour Instruction

Biennial election

Guwahati, May 2: The Election Commission will hold the biennial election to Rajya Sabha from Assam to fill vacancies. The term of Prime Minister Manmohan Singh and Kumar Deepak Das expires on June 14. The last date for withdrawal of candidature is May 23 and counting of votes will be held on May 30. The election will have to be completed by June 3.

First prize

Dibrugarh: Assam Medical College and Hospital team bagged the first prize in the Santanu Sengupta inter-college debate held here on Thursday.

‘Rape’ charge

B>n Silchar: The medical examination of the 20-year-old girl from a tea estate, who was allegedly raped by her boy-friend at Kalacherra in Hailakandi district on Monday, indicated that she was not raped. Her boyfriend, Nasiruddin, 26, however, is absconding, police said.

May Day

Guwahati: Don Bosco School, Panbazar, here celebrated May Day on Thursday. In his address, principal Fr Antony Thekkel talked about dignity of labour and and thanked the support staff for their services.

Guwahati: The Guwahati branch of Alcoholics’ Anonymous on Thursday organised an interactive session at the GMCH for post graduate medical students nd faculty members fo the college.

Suicide

Goalpara: A student of Dubapara High School here, Manalisha Nath, committed suicide on Thursday by hanging in her own kitchen. She had appeared for HSLC exams this year.

Lightning

Dhubri: Mahesh Chandra Roy, 50 of Debottar Hasda village died on the spot while Bitoran Barman, 30 of Biskhowa village and Noor Jahan Bibi, 45 of Bhamondanga village in the district, were injured when lightning struck them on Wednesday night.

Students tour

Dhubri: Altogether 98 students from various schools of the district left for Guwahati for Chief Minister’s Gyanjyoti Programme on Wednesday.

Instruction

Dhubri: Assam home secretary in a letter written instructed the district administration on Thursday, sub-divisional officers and circle officer to monitor the function of various private financial institutions.
