Imphal, Sept. 4: The Joint Students' Coordination Committee of Manipur has urged the people and educational institutions of the state to celebrate Teachers' Day on October 5 instead of tomorrow.

A release issued by the convener of the joint committee, Nongthombam Muktangamba Mangang, said October 5 was World Teachers' Day.

Unesco had proclaimed October 5 as International Teachers' Day in 1994.

The students' committee, formed by the All Manipur Students' Union, Manipur Students' Federation, Kangleipak Students' Association and the Students' Union of Kangleipak, warned that strict action would be taken if the occasion was celebrated tomorrow. It asked the people not to spend unnecessarily and fool around at the event.

Various schools and colleges have made arrangements to celebrate Teachers' Day tomorrow.

The G.P. Women's College hostel has scheduled its Teachers' Day-cum-freshers' welcome function tomorrow. Manipur municipal administration, housing and urban development minister Th. Shyamkumar is expected to grace the occasion.

An administrator of the school said, 'We will not postpone the date. We have made huge preparations for tomorrow. It will be a big function.'

Ten teachers have been selected for the State Award to Teachers 2017, to be presented during the state-level Teachers' Day celebration here. The award comprises Rs 10,000 and a citation each. Teachers who receive the award are also given the privilege of continuing their service for another year after attaining the age of superannuation.

Two teachers from Manipur have been selected for the National Award to Teachers - Kangjam Jayanta, a primary teacher of Samushang Primary School, Imphal West, and Hijam Sobita, the principal of Lamlong Higher Secondary School, Imphal East.

The ZEO Zone II, Imphal East, has also selected 10 teachers for the district-level awards for teachers tomorrow.

The All-Manipur Government Higher Secondary School Lecturers' Welfare Association, in a statement released today, wished teachers and students in the state.

The association drew the attention of chief minister N, Biren Singh to their grievances, urging him to recommend the Seventh Pay Commission, among other demands, including reforms in the teachers' recruitment and promotion policy.

The chief minister, in his message, said, 'I am happy to learn that Teachers' Day is being celebrated. I salute all the teachers of Manipur for their dedication to their work and wish them a Happy Teachers' Day.'

Governor Najma A. Heptulla also extended greetings to the people, especially teachers. In a message, she said Teachers' Day is celebrated across the country tomorrow in the memory of Dr S. Radhakrishnan, renowned educationist, scholar and former President, on his birth anniversary. He recognised the importance of teachers who are the guides and mentors of youth. Every human being has to go through a learning phase and his mentor's ability will determine the performance of his pupils. The traditional guru-shishya tradition has yielded to the current system of schools, colleges and universities with the basic principle of imparting knowledge remaining the same.
