Dhubri: A four-member team of the Criminal Investigation Department (CID) of Assam police, led by deputy superintendent of police S. Changsan, has begun investigating a multicrore-rupee scam connected with the non-distribution of government of funds meant for those affected by floods and erosion in South Salmara-Mancachar district of lower Assam.

The Assam government had sanctioned Rs 4.15 crore during 2016-2017 for distribution among the flood-hit families in the district. However, it was alleged that the officials of the department concerned had not done so.

Azizur Rahman of Boro Pattakata village under South Salmara, who lodged the complaint before the CID, said the government had sanctioned the funds to distribute among 163 flood-affected families, with Rs 95,100 for each family which had lost their houses to erosion.

It was alleged that the then circle officer of South Salmara, A.K. Iliash Ahmed, the husband of the anchalik panchayat president, Mirazul Houqe and a local mediator, Abdul Aziz had looted the money by opening a number of fake accounts with the help of the Customer Service Point of a national bank.

The CID team has visited the house of each beneficiary and recorded their statement, said the complainant.

Based upon the complaint, the CID has registered a case bearing number 9/2018 under Section of 120 (B)/406/420/468 of IPC against the accused.
