Chiraranjan triumphs

Guwahati, July 7: Chiraranjan Bhuyan clinched the title of the 16th P.C. Borooah First Sunday Chess Tournament, organised by P.C. Borooah Chess Academy here yesterday.

Chiraranjan remained unbeaten throughout the tournament to tally 5.5 points from six rounds. In the final round, Prodip Bhuyan held him to a draw.

Nitish Das scored five points from an equal number of rounds for the second position. Prandeep Bhattacharjya and Hiranya Das also scored five points each but were declared third and fourth respectively on the basis of tiebreak scores.

Prodip Bhuyan, Uddipta Gogoi and Debanga Kalita tallied 4.5 points apiece to be placed fifth, sixth and seventh respectively according to tiebreak scores. Deba Kumar Das, Arunabh Gohain and Bidisha Sarma were declared eighth, ninth and 10th respectively by scoring four points each.

In the under-7 category, Shaurya Jalan scored four points to claim the first position. Unmilita Pathak scored two to come second.

In the under-nine category, Adreeja Sinha scored three points and claimed the first position. Snehasish Sinha and Ayan Baruah also scored three points each but were declared second and third respectively on the basis of tiebreak scores.

In under-11 category, Shubhay Agarwala scored 3.5 points for the first position while Priyangshu Bhowmick and Mridangom Goswami tallied two each to be placed second and third respectively.

In the under-13 group, Pranit Malhotra came position by scoring four points. Kaustuv Deka tallied 3.5 points and got second position while Gunjan Deb scored three points to claim the third position. Kaustuv Lahiri and Aryaman Tewari scored four points each to be declared under-15 winner and runner-up respectively on the basis of tiebreak scores.
