Cachar girl alleges rape

A 19-year-old girl, who tried to commit suicide yesterday after her boyfriend allegedly raped her on Monday night, was produced in the court of the chief judicial magistrate here today where her statement was recorded.

Silchar, July 26: A 19-year-old girl, who tried to commit suicide yesterday after her boyfriend allegedly raped her on Monday night, was produced in the court of the chief judicial magistrate here today where her statement was recorded.

The incident took place in Cachar district of Assam.

Local residents said the girl was stopped from jumping into the Barak by a few people who were present at the spot.

Later, Katigorah police was informed and an FIR was lodged at with the police station last evening.

Katigorah police station in-charge Shankar Mondal told The Telegraph this afternoon that the girl had stated that she was being courted by Mamon Barbhuiya (also known as Jabir Hussain Barbhuiya) for the past 10-11 months and he had promised to marry her.

Mamon, 23, of Haritikar village under Katigorah constituency of Cachar district, runs a small business in Meghalaya.

On Monday night, she alleged, he took her to an abandoned house at Haritikar where they had sexual intercourse.

During the wee hours next morning, he took her to Kalain and abandoned her there.

Kalain, around 30km from here, is under Katigorah constituency of Cachar district.

When contacted, Mohitosh Nath Laskar, sub-inspector of Katigorah police outpost and the investigating officer, said an FIR had been lodged against Mamon Barbhuiya under section 376 (rape), section 493 (cohabitation caused by a man deceitfully inducing a belief of lawful marriage) and section 417 (cheating) of the IPC.

He said a probe has been initiated.

Mondal said the girl was taken to Silchar Medical College and Hospital today for medical examination. The report of the medical test will be available in next 10-15 days, he added.
