Guwahati, July 2: The Opposition Congress will hold its first stock-taking meeting on the Assembly poll debacle this month, said Ripun Bora, who was appointed the interim PCC president today.

Bora, a Rajya Sabha MP and PCC vice-president, revealed the move on the sidelines of an iftar at Rajiv Bhawan here this evening.

Party insiders said the move to appoint an interim president suggests the high command wants to "test the overall mood" before taking a final call on whether to continue with Bora or go for a new chief. Quite a few leaders are lobbying for the coveted post.

Bora said his first priority would be to hold a stock-taking meet on the poll debacle and boost the morale of partymen.

The Congress was not only unseated by the BJP-led alliance but its tally fell to 26 in the April Assembly polls from 78 in 2011. The party was in the midst of grappling with the debacle when PCC president Anjan Dutta died on June 19 in New Delhi.

Former chief minister Tarun Gogoi, leader of the Opposition Debabrata Saikia, senior leaders Sarat Borkataky and Bidya Singh Engleng, and MLAs Rekibuddin Ahmed and Sherman Ali Ahmed were among those who attended the iftar.
