Assam girl eyes crowns

Assam girl Ashmita Chaliha will vie for double crown in the 1st South Asian Junior Badminton Championship at Deshbhakta Tarun Ram Phookan Indoor Stadium here on Friday.

Guwahati: Assam girl Ashmita Chaliha will vie for double crown in the 1st South Asian Junior Badminton Championship at Deshbhakta Tarun Ram Phookan Indoor Stadium here on Friday.

The teenage prodigy will meet compatriot Aakarshi Kashyap in the singles final and partner Mithulla (UK) to clash with Maldives duo Fatmath Nabaaha and Aminath Nabeeha in the doubles final. In the singles semi-final on Thursday, Ashmita beat Na-fha Nasrullah of Maldives 21-6, 21-5, while Aakarshi beat Jessica Gurung of Nepal 21-1, 21-3.

In the doubles semi-final, Ashmita and Mithulla beat Nepal girls Jessica and Sun-ayana Mukhiya 21-11, 21-12. Fatmath and Aminath ousted Bangladesh pair Reshma and Urmi Akhtar 21-14, 21-15.

In the boys' singles final, Aryaman Tandon will lock horns with Aruntap Dasgupta in an all-Indian final. Aryaman defeated Nepal boy Nabin Shrestha 21-6, 19-21, 21-19 while Arintap beat another Nepal boy Dipesh Dhami 20-22, 21-15, 21-14.

Arintap will also vie for the boys' doubles title partnering Krishna Prasad G. The duo beat Bangladesh opponents Jumar Al Amin Amin and Gaurav Singh 21-11, 21-13.
