A group of Asom Jatiyatabadi Yuba Chhatra Parishad (AJYCP) workers on Saturday burnt an effigy of Assam chief minister Sarbananda Sonowal and organised a protest against the Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA) near a temple inaugurated by him in the heart of Nagaon town.

Nagaon police said the protest site was far away from the scheduled programme venue of the chief minister. The protest site was about 300m from the temple.

Sonowal later took part in a programme organised by Jogi Sanmilan, an annual programme of the Jogi community, where he highlighted the development work done during his tenure as the chief minister.

“Implementation of Clause 6 of the Assam Accord is one of the vital pending political issues of the state. It is pending for the last few years for political reasons,” he said.

Local legislator Rupak Sarma, accompanied by other senior BJP leaders, participated in the rally.

This was the second anti-CAA protest in the central Assam district in the last four days.

On Tuesday, a group of local youths from Puranigudam had burnt an effigy of health minister Himanta Biswa Sarma.
