Tura, March 25: The Garo Hills United Alliance (GHUA) today decided to boycott the Garo Hills Autonomous District Council (GHADC) budget session slated to be held on Tuesday.

The GHUA alliance includes five members of district council - Rupert M. Sangma, Righteous N. Sangma, Libestone T. Sangma, Devier M. Sangma and Kenadik Marak.

The alliance decided to boycott the budget session because of "illegal way of functioning" of council chairman Boston Marak.

Rupert M. Sangma had submitted a motion for discussion on participation of non-tribals in GHADC election but the legislative branch of the district council disallowed his move.

The alliance feels that participation of non-tribals in the elections nullifies the very objective of the creation of district council.

"I brought this motion to safeguard the interest of the tribal people. The rejection of the motion is an act of betrayal of the tribal people's aspirations. The executive committee is against the interest of the tribals," he said.

The five members of district council had not joined the Garo Hills Progressive Alliance (GHPA) because the executive committee was formed with a non-tribal member.

Rupert added that they would inform Congress members about the move of the chairman and if necessary would meet the governor to brief him about this arbitrary and undemocratic action of the council chairman.

The five members of the council have formed an alliance to champion the cause of the indigenous people in the council. Seven Congress members are also part of the Opposition in the district council.

The National Peoples' Party (NPP)-led Garo Hills Progressive Alliance (GHPA) formed the executive committee in the council that has a strength of 29 elected members.
