In Indramalati (1939), the second Assamese film ever made, Bhupenda was given the role of a shepherd boy, for which he had to appear wearing dirty clothes. But Bhupenda, who was very young then, wanted to appear in fine clothes. To satisfy him, my father Jyoti Prasad Agarwala who directed the film, let him wear his own tie. But as the tie was too long for Bhupenda, my father cut it short with a pair of scissors. When somebody asked what a shepherd boy would do with a tie, my father replied that sometimes people give their old clothes to poor shepherd boys and the one portrayed in the film was one among them. Bhupenda also sang songs in the film. Bhupenda used to get angry over small issues. One day, when I asked him why he got angry so quickly, he said it was the one thing he got from my father.
