Guwahati, April 21: The All Assam Students' Union today wrote to Gauhati University vice-chancellor Mridul Hazarika to remove all loopholes of the semester system in the post-graduate and undergraduate courses of the university.
On the other hand, the Sonitpur district unit of the SFI today blocked National Highway 15 in the district protesting against police "atrocity" yesterday on the Gauhati University campus.
Around 50 SFI members and supporters were injured yesterday afternoon when police caned them while they protested in front of the administrative building of the university.
The AASU demanded that the university must conduct all examinations and declare results on time so as not to jeopardize the future of the students.
The students' union said it welcomed the semester system with the hope that it would improve the education scenario of the state only to find that the number of seats had been reduced on the pretext of maintaining teacher-student ratio.
It demanded Hazarika to remove all loopholes from the semester system and increase seats in different courses to give justice to the students.
