Residents of Vivekananda Road in north Kolkata who cannot move in and out with their cars for the next month-and-a-half because of the demolition of the Vivekananda Road flyover were on Thursday handed stickers that will allow parking at convenient locations nearby.
The second and the last phase of the demolition of the flyover, a part of which collapsed in March 2016, killing 45 people, starts on Friday and is likely to continue for one-and-a-half months.
The portion to be pulled down stretches between Ganesh Talkies and Girish Park.
Officers from the Jorabagan Traffic Guard distributed stickers to around 50 car owners. The stickers will allow them to park their vehicles on stretches of Balaram Dey Street, Rajendra Mullick Street, Banarasi Ghosh Street and a few other roads.
“We have identified residents of Vivekananda Road who would not be able to move in and out of their homes in their cars once the stretch is closed for the demolition. Some of them were issued stickers on Thursday. The others will get stickers soon,” said a police officer.
Each sticker has the words “Property Line Vehicle”, the address of the car owner and the car’s registration number printed on it. The stickers, valid for three months, bear the signature of the officer-in-charge of the Jorabagan Traffic Guard.
The sticker also has a line about entry and exit. The police said this was meant to facilitate the movement of those who would want to get dropped at their offices or picked up while returning.
“Those who own several cars are not being given as many stickers. That is still acceptable. Loading and unloading of goods will pose a real challenge,” said Madan Maity, a resident of Vivekananda Road and a trader.
Officers of the urban development department said a stretch covering four pillars of the flyover would be barricaded on Friday afternoon before men and machinery moved in for the demolition.
Over the next few weeks, more stretches of Vivekananda Road will be barricaded.
Buses headed towards Shyambazar from Rabindra Sarani will be diverted towards Central Avenue past Poddar Court. Smaller vehicles moving down Rabin-
dra Sarani towards Shyambazar cannot turn right at Ganesh Talkies. They will have to move straight before turning right to Beadon Row, Beadon Sarani or BK Pal Avenue.
