Situated in the heart of the City of Joy and the oldest swimming club in India, The Calcutta Swimming Club has primed up to be the one and only all-sports club in Calcutta. The Calcutta Swimming Club, popularly known as CSC, was founded in 1887 and since then this social club underwent innumerable changes. The club is presently prepped up with refurbishments where each and every corner of the club has been revamped. Having the largest outdoor pool in all of Asia, CSC has a serene indoor pool, various indoor sports facilities, a health parlour, food junctions, a bar, and a banquet hall, all of which have been renovated with modern features. The Calcutta Swimming Club is also planning to create a satellite version of the club. With the new year, CSC welcomed the new president of the club, Nitin C Dani, and along with other important club members, under whom the new changes of the club took place. The Telegraph dropped by the club to have a quick chat with the new president and bring you the new look of the club.

How long have you been associated with The Calcutta Swimming Club? And how has been the experience so far?
I’ve been associated with the club since 1978 when I became a member. In these long years, I have forged a strong bond with so many members of the club. Day by day the club is progressing and growing. We have a very good club team that helps to make these necessary changes in the club and make it the most happening place in the city to hang out.
How has the club evolved throughout these years?
In the year ’78, when I became a member, the culture was very different, but gradually a lot of infrastructural changes has been taking place. The club has evolved over the years in its new avatar. When I joined the club, it was mainly about two sports, that is snooker and swimming. At the present day, CSC has turned out to be the most sporty club with different sports like badminton, darts, golf, cricket, table tennis and many more.

What are your further plans and wish list for the club?
Along with the very hardworking club team, me being the new president, we have a mind to have a satellite club as well. We are in the process where we’ll be having additional facilities like lawn tennis, bowling and many more. We are looking for a space very near to the club which will host more sports activities.
What is your message to the club members?
We are already into the festive calendar and have major entertainment events lined up. I shall look forward to seeing all my club members in large numbers present at the club along with their guests. CSC has two state-of-the-art airconditioned squash courts
The banquet hall on the first floor gave us nostalgic old-Calcutta vibes with the checkered floor and beautiful Calcutta-inspired wall painting. The banquet hall is available for parties, conferences, seminars, tournaments, etc
Members of the club and their guests can enjoy the club’s table tennis on two high-quality Joola tables in the airconditioned TT room. The TT room is also equipped with robots which serve the ping-pong balls to single players
The games room has two international standard pool tables, chess games, and darts, and has installed PlayStation 5 too
CSC has installed a golf simulator
Adjoining the outdoor pool is the club gymnasium and health parlour with world-class fitness equipment and dedicated trainers. The gym also has steam and sauna facilities
