A 21-year-old homemaker was electrocuted while using an induction plate at her New Alipore home on Thursday morning.
Police said Sraboni Sardar was in the kitchen and her one-year-old son was in their bedroom when the incident happened around 10am on Thursday.
Her neighbours on SN Roy Road heard the child crying for long and when they checked they saw Sraboni lying still on the kitchen floor, a neighbour told the police.
She was taken to Vidyasagar State General Hospital, where she was declared dead.
Officers of New Alipore police station said when they reached the spot they found the induction plate plugged into the switch board.
“The woman seems to have been electrocuted from the induction plate,” said an officer.
Her husband Ramapada Sardar was not at home when the accident happened.
At least eight electrocution deaths have been reported in the city and the fringe areas in the last 10 days. The majority of the deaths happened inside homes.
A faulty wiring system or short-circuit might have resulted in the fatalities.
New Alipore police said they have asked the forensic department to find out the cause of the electrocution.
