A Bansdroni resident on Saturday urged Kolkata mayor Firhad Hakim to address water woes faced by the residents in the area.

Abhishek Gupta, a resident of Roynagar Place in Bansdroni, alleged that a section of the residents were installing pumps to siphon off water from the network leaving others struggling with water barely trickling down the pipeline.

Gupta voiced his concern during a Talk to Mayor session on Saturday afternoon where senior officials of the civic body were present.

“The water supply problem in this area is not new. The flow pressure is very weak and to compensate for that there are few houses who use pumps to draw water directly from the pipelines,” said Gupta.

Hakim assured of intervention by sending a team to the area on Monday. But before doing so, he recalled how this problem of water theft used to be an area of major concern across parts of Garden Reach before a booster pumping station was inaugurated in November 2021.

“There was a time when many residents across parts of Garden Reach would pump out water directly from the pipeline owing to poor water pressure...,” Hakim said while talking to his team of officials.

“Now, we have installed a separate pipeline of 16-inch diameter and there is no dearth of flow of water.”

The civic body has decided to construct a few capsule booster-pumping stations along the eastern suburbs to meet the demands of the residents on either sides of EM Bypass, Garia and Tollygunge.

Officials said there was no immediate plan to build one such for Bansdroni.
