A fresh system over the Bay of Bengal has brought another wet spell to Kolkata.

The low-pressure system has formed over the northwest and the adjoining west-central Bay of Bengal, off the Odisha-Andhra coast, said a Met official.

“The system is quite far from the Bengal coast. But under its influence, rain-bearing clouds are travelling towards south Bengal,” said G.K. Das, the director of IMD, Kolkata.

On Monday, a clear sky in the morning soon gave way to overcast conditions. Around 1.30pm, a dark mass of clouds turned the sky dark. The overcast conditions persisted throughout the day and there were multiple brief spells of rain.

“The next 48 hours are likely to bring more rain to the city. But the rain is likely to be light to moderate. Some parts of East and West Midnapore and South 24-Parganas are likely to get a spell of heavy rain,” said Das.

The system may lose strength as it moves into land in a day or two.

The overcast conditions kept the temperature under check on Monday and will continue to do so for the next two days, he said.

But after a couple of days, the weather will be back to being hot and sultry, said Das.
