A man carrying a suitcase had on Sunday night entered the building where Nidhir Chandra Kundu, 67, lived and left the next morning, police have apparently come to know after scanning CCTV footage.

Cops suspect the man visible in the footage was Kundu’s killer, who was yet to be caught till Wednesday night.

The decomposed body of Kundu, who had been living alone since the death of his wife a few years ago, was found wrapped in a polythene sheet and a bedsheet under a bed in his apartment in Bijoygarh in south Kolkata on Tuesday afternoon.

“The preliminary post-mortem report says the victim had died because of a bleeding head injury and two non-bleeding injuries,” said an officer at Lalbazar.

“The post-mortem revealed that there were three major injuries on the victim’s body. He had suffered a head injury which caused a lot of blood loss and two injuries in his cervical area, including one on his private part.”

Police sources said the suspect entered the building around 8.20pm on Sunday carrying a suitcase and left with multiple bags around 6.20 the next morning.

“We are trying to ascertain the man’s identity from the footage of other CCTV cameras in the neighbourhood,” an officer said.

Kundu, a retired state government employee, had last spoken over the phone to a former colleague on Sunday night, the officer said. The cops are questioning the man.

“The man works as a driver in the same department where the victim worked. We are questioning him. He was the last person who had a telephonic conversation with the victim,” the officer said.

The post-mortem findings suggest Kundu was killed before dinner as his stomach was found empty, an officer in the homicide department said.

The police had on Tuesday found a bowl of cooked chicken in Kundu’s kitchen.
