Dipak Das, the businessman shot dead at Rajabazar on Wednesday evening, had apparently refused to return some money that he owed to Rakesh Das, the prime accused, police said on Friday following his arrest along with another person.

Rakesh was a business associate of Dipak till they parted ways recently following a dispute over payments, investigators said.

“Rakesh claimed he had been demanding the amount from Dipak for sometime. Recently, Dipak told him he wouldn’t pay the amount. This possibly led him to murder Dipak,” said a police officer of the detective department.

Soon after firing two bullets on Dipak, Rakesh and his associate had walked out of the former’s grocery shop on Keshab Chandra Sen Street in north Kolkata. Eye witnesses told the police that Rakesh and his associates did not seem to be in a hurry while walking out of Dipak’s grocery shop around 4.30pm on Wednesday.

Dipak was first rushed to the Calcutta Medical College and Hospital and later his family shifted him to SSKM Hospital with two bullet injuries where succumbed to the injuries.

Over the next two days the police kept tracking Rakesh and finally found him at his ancestral house in Jamui in Bihar. After interrogating the 23-year-old, the cops learnt Manish Das had accompanied him to Dipak’s office that afternoon. Subsequently, Manish was rounded up from Uttarpara in Hooghly.

The clothes which the two accused had worn while committing the crime have been recovered from the possession of both of them along with a gold chain and a locket, which the police said, appeared to be made of gold.

“We will produce both the accused before a court on Saturday and seek their custody,” the officer said.
