A system brewing over the Bay of Bengal was tipped to trigger heavy rain in Kolkata on Monday.

But a cloudy sky and drizzles were what the city witnessed.

The low-pressure area intensified into a depression first and then a deep depression. But it deviated further away from the Bengal coast than it was supposed to at the time of landfall, said the Met office.

“The system turned into a deep depression on Monday morning. Around 8am, it made landfall near Paradip in Odisha. It was initially supposed to hit land near Balasore,” said a Met official.

Balasore is around 250km from Kolkata and Paradip around 450km.

The system was in the interiors of Odisha on Monday afternoon, losing steam as it moved through land. Over the next 24 hours, it would head towards north Chhattisgarh and Madhya Pradesh, said the official.

In Kolkata, the sky is going to remain cloudy in patches over the next 48 hours. Some more rain is likely. But the system is too far to have any more substantial impact, the official said. The overcast conditions will continue to keep the mercury under check.

The minimum temperature on Monday was 29.7 degrees, three notches below normal. The Met office recorded around 10mm of rain in Alipore.
