The Kolkata Municipal Corporation (KMC) has written to all major private hospitals in the city asking them to report if any child was admitted with fever in their hospitals, a senior official of the civic body said on Wednesday.

The hospitals were told to inform about any other symptoms in the admitted children along with the preliminary diagnosis by the doctor about the type of illness.

The KMC has also asked its primary health centres to report any unusual rise in the number of kids coming to the centres with fever. They have been told to increase surveillance in their respective areas so that they are able to know about any outbreak of fever among children, if any.

A senior official of the civic body said the RN Tagore Institute of Cardiac Sciences had informed them that six children were admitted in their hospital with fever.

An official of the hospital said tests had confirmed the presence of respiratory syncytial virus (RSV) in the samples taken from the children who are admitted. “Barring one, all the children are from Odisha, Jharkhand and Bihar. One is from Kolkata.”

The KMC’s note to the private hospitals came in the wake of several children suffering from fever in north Bengal. Some of them have tested positive for RSV.
