The city weather is set to improve from Wednesday, the Met office said after 48 hours of rain and clouds.

“The systems causing clouds and rain have weakened. The sky will start clearing from Wednesday,” said a Met official.

The first half of Tuesday saw multiple spells of rain. The spells were short but intense at many places. The showers subsided from late afternoon.

The Met office recorded around 45mm of rain in Alipore on Tuesday. Patuli, Dhapa and adjoining areas along EM Bypass received close to 60mm of rain, according to figures from the pumping stations of the CMC.

Some pockets known for waterlogging, Mahatma Gandhi Road and adjoining areas of central Calcutta, had ankle deep water till forenoon.

The rainy spell, which started on Monday, was triggered by a low-pressure area off the Odisha-Andhra coast on the Bay of Bengal. The system has since moved into land and was on Tuesday positioned over south Chhattisgarh and Odisha, losing steam and turning into a cyclonic circulation.

The monsoon trough, extending from Rajasthan to the Bay of Bengal, passes through the system over Chhattisgarh.

“The two systems have contributed to the wet spell, strengthening the monsoon currents,” said a Met official.

The rain on Monday, as well as Tuesday, were accompanied by gusts of wind clocking over 30kmph, unusual for monsoon showers. A Met official attributed the gusts of wind to the city being under the grip of a pressure gradient because of the two systems.
