The city recorded a brief spell of thunderstorm accompanied by gusts of wind in the afternoon, which gave Kolkatans some respite from the sultry conditions prevailing in the first half of the day.

The Met office said Monday would be hot and sunny. The maximum temperature will be around 31 degrees Celsius.

The Met office said a cyclonic circulation that lay over Bihar and parts of Jharkhand was responsible for the thunderstorm. The Alipore Met office recorded a maximum wind speed of 46kmph at 4.50pm. The thunderstorm went on for about half an hour.

An official of the Met office said moisture-laden winds over the Bay of Bengal went in the direction of the cyclonic circulation, leading to the formation of thunder clouds.

“The rain-bearing winds passed through Bengal. The pent-up heat acted like a catalyst and added to the cloud formation. As the thunder clouds moved towards the city, a thunderstorm was recorded in the evening,” the official said.
