The Wolf777 New Year’s Day Races at the Royal Calcutta Turf Club were a thrilling series of competitions. Excitement and adrenaline ran through the Club with an energetic crowd, good food and the warm winter sun at the annual event. There were a total of seven horse races, beginning in the afternoon. The animated and enthusiastic crowd were quick to cheer for their favourites as the majestic beasts raced to glory. A handy booklet informing the details of the races was available and spotted in the hands of enthusiasts keenly following the game.

The stands roared when Meropi won the very first race she participated in, The Wolf777 Indian Produce Stakes. “She was not showing us too much initially. We thought she would be taking some time. Then, after she started eating a little bit and we started pushing her in the right direction, that’s when she showed her true form. This is the first race of her life and she has won it! It is a big race as well, a trademark race to go forward,” said Aashay Doctor, Meropi’s trainer.

“The last time we had a show like this, there had been no Covid. The pandemic was a major reason why the footfall had reduced in the past couple of years. Today, we see a humongous crowd. GST is also not that big a factor any more. With the efforts of the team, the word had spread that ‘Come back to RCTC....’ This will just continue improving. Racing is a people-oriented sport. It’s a game of skill. It’s not gambling or juwa. We are looking forward to seeing the people of Calcutta come out and see racing as a heritage, as a fantastic experience,” said Sivaji Dutt, CEO, RCTC.
