The Dalhousie Institute came alive with a captivating discussion helmed by quizmaster and author Barry O’Brien, with SV Raman for company, on his debut book The Anglo-Indians: A Portrait of a Community on May 19. Aptly titled ‘A Community Matter(s)’ the evening brought together a diverse group of attendees, including avid readers and business executives, eager to engage in thought-provoking conversations about the book and the unique Anglo-Indian community. The atmosphere was filled with enthusiasm, as participants freely exchanged thoughts and observations of the author’s work.

Addressing the audience, O'Brien underscored the ways in which the Anglo-Indian community stands apart from others, their fusion of Western and Indian traditions and even cuisines. “The Anglo-Indians have traditionally held a unique place in society, bridging the gap between British and Indian cultures. Their exceptional viewpoint and diverse experiences contribute to their distinctiveness,” he said. Later in the evening he also emphasised the community’s significant contributions to sectors such as education, sports, and the overall cultural milieu of the country. Drawing from meticulous research and personal accounts, he sensitively conveyed the struggles, triumphs, and rich cultural heritage of the community while reading passages from his book. He was ably supported with probing questions from Raman, which he fielded with aplomb and which added to the evening’s enriching discussion.
