Music brings people together and when it’s for a good cause the scene becomes even more special. This is why on August 28, Cheap Charlie on Sarat Bose Road played host to a fund-raiser — Raising Awareness on Cervical Cancer — organised by The White Sparrow. The White Sparrow is a student-led organisation that spreads awareness about cancer. The objective behind the event was to spread awareness and raise funds to provide the HPV vaccine to underprivileged women.

The event included local acts The Yellow Taxi, Josh and Dipan, and Rubel and Solaris. DJ Joel was on the console to keep things warm before the event took off.

The Yellow Taxi was the headlining act of the night. The members —Russel Siraj, Hamza Khan, Pratham Sheth and Ricaordo Gomes — belted out a bunch of popular English songs, covering bands like Coldplay.

Josh and Dipan were the second act of the night. The two along with Mainak ‘Bumpy’ Nag Chowdhury on bass and Arindam Chowdhury on drums created a heavy-rock playlist with their originals as well as covers. While Dipan (Basak) refused to give his guitar a rest, Josh (Dasgupta) channelised his inner Eddie Vedder vocals. “A small step towards a greater goal. I felt elated after seeing all the people come together to support the cause. I felt blessed to share the stage with the legendary Mainak Nag Chowdhury. The White Sparrow Organisation is doing an amazing job, and I think they’re the real rock stars,” said Dipan. “It felt great playing in front of a big crowd after so long. I really enjoyed the crowd singing along and participating in our performance, and most of all, I loved playing with the band after a long time,” said Josh.

It was a packed house and people turned up for a good cause

Rubel and Solaris opened the night with some hip-hop and rap tracks

The White Sparrow is an initiative by Komal Jain and Priyam Mundhra. “The White Sparrow, a Kolkata-based non-profit organisation, organised a fund-raiser aimed at raising awareness around the prevention of cervical cancer and raising funds to administer the preventive HPV vaccine to underprivileged women, who have no means to avail this expensive, life-saving vaccine. I urge you to come forward and support this noble cause,” said Komal Jain of The White Sparrow.
