Q: I am a 30-year-old BCom graduate. Currently, I am doing the UNIQUA programme from NIIT. It is a training course for entry into the BPO sector. Would a course in SAP augment my career?

Indrajeet Das

A: Whether you need to do a SAP course depends on what career you want to choose. If you have enrolled in NIIT-UNIQUA, which is a course for the BPO industry, you can go into any general management role available in a BPO and hence SAP would not be required.

Q: I am an MCA working in a government company. I have a lot of spare time. Can I do a PhD in management?

Anand Rai

A: If you are interested in management and have spare time, you can definitely go for a long distance PhD programme. Based on your qualifications and interest, you need to ascertain the field of study — marketing, finance, HR, systems or operations management. Also think whether this additional qualification would be of any use.

Q: I am 23 years old and have completed graduation in communicative English. I am now learning Spanish from Jadavpur University. I am also doing a course in mass communication. What are my career options?

Priyanka Roy

A: There can be various career options based on your qualifications. Since you have studied English and have also done mass communication, you can search for opportunities in the print media. You can be a journalist, an editor or an interpretor, among others.

Q: I have completed masters in computer application (MCA) from Ignou with 65 per cent marks. But I don’t know any programming language. Please suggest what I should do.

Nilesh

A: Whether or not you need to learn a programming language depends on the type of job you are looking for. If you want to keep all your options open, you should learn a programming language. I suggest you look for a job based on your MCA qualification and then, if you feel the need, learn a programming language to further your career.

Q: I am a 28-year-old commerce graduate and have an MBA in marketing. I have three years of experience in marketing / sales but I don’t like sales. Should I return to finance since I had finance as minor? Or should I pursue another course?

Avipriya Saha

A: It is good that you have identified your weakness and want to move away from it. Since you have an MBA in marketing, it would be better if you work in that field. Marketing or advertising might be your area but these are distinct from sales. You can try for your minor subject area but organisations would not give so much credence to that. You can also look for sales coordination or MIS related jobs, which might suit your temperament.
