Q: I have done an MSc in chemistry but I don’t want to do a PhD. Can I apply for jobs in the research and development sector? Should I do an MBA?

Ritu Mitra

A: For jobs in R&D, you would not require an MBA, but a PhD would enhance your chances immensely. If you want to do an MBA, then chemistry won’t play a role in your next job.

Q: I am a law graduate and registered as an advocate. I am also pursuing chartered accountancy finals and CS inter and attached to a firm as a consultant. I want to pursue a part-time MBA from IISWBM. Am I on the right track? Mitali Seal

A: Yes you are, but which track are you on? You have a penchant for studies. Law degree with CA or CS was a good combination, but why MBA? In case you do an MBA in HR, your law and accountancy might come in handy for labour law and compensation related jobs.

Q: I am working as a SAP-ABAP consultant for more than a year. Would my experience as a SAP consultant come handy if I go for an MBA?

Prasun Samanta

A: It is not necessary for a SAP-ABAP consultant to be an MBA. But after doing an MBA if you want to utilise your SAP skills, then you can be a system analyst. If you do a specialistaion in systems, you would be utilising your earlier education and experience, but if you opt for marketing, finance or HR then your stream would change completely.

Q: I got 45 per cent in graduation and am working as a cabin crew. But I want to be in a managerial position. Should I pursue a part-time MBA? Is there any other short course that would be of help?

Dhruv Khanna

A: Your graduation marks would be an impediment in getting admission in any good MBA institute. But you can try for the C and D category institutes. Apart from MBA, you would also have to do specific courses suitable for the function you are aiming at. After doing both, you would have to work your way up the ladder. A managerial position would not come so easily.

Q: I am a 23-year-old BCom graduate. I am pursuing CFA from Icfai University. What are the career opportunities after completing CFA?

Rohit Gupta

A: After CFA you can apply for jobs in the finance departments of corporate houses. If you want a job in a consulting organisation then you can try for performance improvement, or internal audit.
