Q:I am working as a 3G UMTS wireless developer in France. I want to relocate to Calcutta. Are there any companies in Calcutta that work in this area? I have done a BE (electrical engineering) and a PGDIT from IIT Kharagpur and have a total work experience of six years and 10 months.

Bhaskar Rakshit

A:Suitable jobs would be available in your areas of technical expertise. If you are willing to relocate to Delhi, Chennai, Pune or Bangalore, you may have more options.

Q: I am 25 years old and have completed an MA in journalism and mass communication. At present, I am working in a private company where I don’t have any job satisfaction. What should I do to change that? With my background, what other jobs would I get?

Shanta Bhattacharjee

A:Your educational background can help you get good jobs in the advertising industry or PR departments of companies. But it is better to decide what kind of a job would give you job satisfaction and then zero in on the specialisation concerned.

Q:I am 32 years old. I have done a postgraduate diploma in management with specialisation in information technology from a not-so reputed management school. But I couldn’t get a job in IT. I’m working in the administrative department of an NGO. Will a course in HR help improve my career prospects? What type of course will be most suitable for me — a full-time course, an evening course or a one-year diploma in human resource management? I am aware that IGNOU also offers a management course. Is that any good?

Priyanka Jha

A:If you think HR management is your calling, then first you should try and get a suitable job in the HR or personnel department of any company.

You can also do a diploma in HR management. I definitely would not advise you to take a sabbatical from work to augment your qualifications.

Please note that to be successful in HR you have to have very good communications skills, interpersonal skills and the ability to motivate people.

Q:I am 37 and have a BSc in chemistry from Bombay University. I have 13 years of experience in fast moving consumer goods’ (FMCG) frontline sales.

I have also done a masters in business economics from Annamalai University. However, I am upset that I haven’t yet been promoted. At the same time, I don’t want to join the insurance or the banking sector. Should I do a course in retailing from ICFAI? Will that help me to get a better position in the retail sector?

Raju

A:The criteria for promotion are experience and performance in a relevant industry. First you should look for a suitable job which will recognise your experience.

Normally a change in job entails a better pay package and in many cases a higher designation.

These days the FMCG sector is thriving and there is no dearth of employment opportunities. So stick it out in FMCG for a while and see.
