Q: I did a diploma in ayurveda 10 years ago. Will I be able to get a job now?

M. Singh

A: You have the option of starting private practice or getting attached to a private practitioner. You can also open an ayurvedic medicine shop. Another option is to do an MPharma in ayurveda and take up teaching. You can conduct seminars and workshops too. Also, you can offer your services as an ayurvedic massage therapist in spas and health centres abroad.

Q: I completed MBA in marketing from the West Bengal University of Technology last year and am now working in a company. I want to do a PhD. Where can I do it from and what are the eligibility criteria?

Niranjan Majumder

A: There are colleges like the IISWBM that have distance learning programmes. The criterion in most colleges is 50 per cent marks in aggregate at the graduate and postgraduate levels. These are usually part-time courses. You can choose a course after doing some research on the placements obtained by the alumni of the course.

Q: After BCom (hons), I completed PGDM (finance) through distance learning from AIMA-CME, New Delhi. However, I failed to get a proper placement and am still looking for a job. Sould I do a SAP-ERP course to improve my career prospects? I don’t want to work in the insurance sector.

Name withheld

A: I can sympathise with your situation. However, all is not lost. I would advise you to post your résumé on job portals and look for a consultant experienced in this domain. Finding a job to your liking with the help of experienced professionals should not be a problem.

The SAP market is growing in India. You can certainly switch to a SAP job profile. But it would be advisable to consider the cost implications as well. Getting trained from a reputed organisation can be expensive. Also, you must be careful of fly-by-night operators who provide training at cheaper rates. You should remember that without a proper certification, it would be an uphill task to find a decent opening.

Q: I work in a private company in Siliguri and want to do an MBA through correspondence. I would like to specialise in marketing or finance. However, I did not have maths in Plus Two or graduation. Will I be eligible? If not, what other specialisations can I choose?

Santu Dalai

A: To do an MBA, it’s not mandatory to have maths either in school or in graduation. You can choose any specialisation. A distance learning course can’t be compared with a full-time one. However, it’s the only recourse for someone with a full-time job. A distance learning course is doesn’t have the classroom component. If possible, take up a part-time course where you could attend classes on weekends. This will be of help as you can interact with classmates from diverse backgrounds.
