Hosts Ranchi University defeated Kolhan 3-0 in the inaugural match of the 6th edition of Chancellor's Trophy, an inter-university volleyball tournament, that began at the varsity's volleyball training court on Shaheed Chowk campus on Wednesday.

In the women's category, the hosts scored an easy walkover as their opponents, Sidho Kanho Murmu University (Dumka), pulled out at the last moment.

In the men's match, hosts RU looked good both in defence and offence right from start.

While Kolhan did manage to put up a spirited fight, the team got knocked out at the end of the 40-minute game.

Shekar Bose, Ranchi University's volleyball coach, who has represented the state in several national events in the past, hailed his team for opening their account with a win. "It was a wholesome performance by the team, I must say," he said, congratulating his boys after the victory.

"Kolhan were strong in both defence and attack. But, we are one of the top contenders of this tournament," he added.

Both RU men and women's teams have been winning Chancellor's Trophy ever since the volleyball tournament began some six years ago, Bose added.

Wednesday's match began around 5:15pm after principal secretary to governor S.K. Sathpathy inaugurated the tournament as chief guest.

Two other matches were scheduled for the day: Vinoba Bhave University vs Kolhan (women) and Sidho Kanho Murmu University vs Vinoba Bhave University (men).
