Tribal script takes cyber leap

Ranchi, Nov. 20: With the world going the digital way the regional 'Tolong' script is not one to lag behind. Linguistic experts made that cyber leap to cross the hurdle in communicating messages using scripts and languages. The first step was taken with the launch of the Kelly Tolong software, which facilitates the development and use of the Tolong script without any communication barrier.

Compact discs of the Kelly Tolong software were released at a gathering of language experts at Satya Bharati by Archbishop Teleshphor P. Toppo. Toppo installed the software in a computer and gave a demonstration on the functioning of the user-friendly software.

The software has been invented and developed by Narayan Oraon and Kislaya.

“One of the major draw backs of globalisation is that it is fast taking over vernacular languages and scripts thus leaving them with no choice but to perish. English as a language is slowly eating up all the regional scripts and vernacular languages that have been in existence since ages,” said Oraon.

Tolong is an apparel worn by tribal women in an anti-clock wise manner. Even the feras round the fire in a marriage ceremony is taken in anti- clock-wise movements by the tribals. The tolong script is also written in the same circular movements used by tribal women to wear the traditional dress.

Toppo said: “In most states the regional languages are well developed. But in tribal-dominated states the situation is just the opposite.

The tribals are the oldest communities and they should be given prime importance. Stress should be laid on the development of their language and culture.”

He said regional languages are given importance over English in other states. “If one visits Punjab or for that matter any other state in the southern part of the country, one will see that each and every sign board has messages written in the regional language. But this is not the case with this state where our language is fast dying ,” said Toppo.

He added: “Languages have a lot in common with the family system, which is fast disintegrating. The same is the case with our regional languages and scripts. We need to preserve both to save our society.”

The new software can be used for publishing books and other purposes where the regional language can communicate the message better. “It’s good that such a step has been taken to preserve the script but the challenge lies in promoting it,” Toppo said.
